Hmm... it's probably easier to name favourite authors.
Terry Pratchett: is there anyone who doesn't love Pratchett? If you just read the early ones to see what the fuss is about, rest assured he's got a lot better after 40 or so books, even though he was always great. His humour's much more subtle, his philosophical waxings much more insightful, and half the time you can't tell which is which.
Neil Gaiman: Sandman is the best comic (or graphic novel for pretentious pedants) ever. And his novels are awesome too.
Mervyn Peake: I love Gormenghast. Also, Steerpike is my hero. Be warned: very dense prose and description-heavy (stemming from his work as an artist), and very looong. Be prepared to lose weeks or months of your life to the Gormenghast trilogy.
H.P. Lovecraft: the master of horror. His prose was all over the place, the stories were meant to horrify but aren't usually that scary, his fear of the other led to some ridiculous racism that really kills the mood... but he was still just brilliant. Cthulhu fhtagn!
Douglas Adams: wheeeeeeeee. 42. Dirk Gently. Wheee. Plus I just picked up a copy of The Meaning of Liff in a bookshop in the New Forest!
All the classic sci-fi and fantasy people, like Iain M. Banks, J.R.R. Tolkein, Isaac Asimov, Larry Niven, Raymond E. Feist, Orson Scott Card...
Plus some new ones, like Susanna Clarke (Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell) and Patrick Rothfuss (The Name of the Wind).
That's about it! Next list: books I hate. How many people mentioned Eragon again?

You like both Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman? Try Good Omens. They wrote it together. I can't believe I forgot to put it on my favourites list....

Good Omens was great! Except the Death character. Both the authors have worlds with brilliant but completely different personifications of death, so why was the Good Omens version so... dull?

Maybe they couldn't decide who's to use... So they tried for a happy medium and PHAILED... I don't know, at least they kept the personification, it would have been a sin not to
